I think they had to find a new Helen because the old Helen was the least appealing character in this or almost any other show. I just knew it couldn't end well. Helen sets off in her car to give the letter to Lynley but, on a quiet country road, someone shoots at Helen's car, driving it off the road and into a tree. Apparently in the previous book in the series Inspector Lynleys wife is killed and this book tells the story of the killers life leading up to the event that takes her life. . In the meantime, the gun that she fired is traced to Rooker's best friend, ex-armyman Michael Wren. Matters become more complicated when it emerges that Rooker's time as a war photographer in Serbia could hold the secret to why he was killed. I actually thought the script was pretty good and it was clever in that it combined the plot of the crime with some of Lynley's personal upheavals. He saw her and quickened his stride to catch up with her. After walking 40-something days he stumbles on a dead body and gets caught up in a murder investigation.
